  1. Anita Says:

Wow, that was really great. Did you put this whole list together yourself?

  2. Ashley Says:

Its a great list.. i remember it all but you FORGOT ONE thing…

The Elephant Song… Skida.. Marinki Dinki Dink Skida Marinki DO… I LOVE YOU…. I love you in the morning and in the afternoon… anyways im just dating myself now!

  3. cassie Says:

Thanks Anita. No I didn’t put it together myself although I’d love to take credit for it if I could. I actually received this as an email quite awhile ago. I’ve been meaning to put it up here for a long time, but it took FOREVER to save all the pictures and add them to the post.

Ashley, I totally remember that song! Wasn’t that Sharon Lois and Bram or something? We used to sing that song at daycare all the time.

Spandex is also a reminder of the 80’s, but I was too scared to search for any pictures. Ew.

  4. Barb Says:

This is completely accurate and truly brilliant! And yes, the Elephant song Ashely mentions is the theme from the Sharon, Lois, and Bram show, which totally ruled.

    Ha, remember mall hair? Hideous!

  5. Jess Says:

    Shot through the heart
    and you’re to blame
    baby you give love
    a bad name!

hahaha… I guess it really is a tell tale sign, I never even knew I knew that song…

  6. Orlando Says:

This is tight! I think you did a good job of summing up a lot of the things we grew up with back then. This new generation has their own thing. No I wasn’t singing Bon Jovi! You forgot a couple of things though: Transformers, Thundercats, and Inspector Gadget (doo dooroo dooroo).

  7. Sean Says:

I was born in 89 and I can remember 75% of these, im scared!

  8. Violinagin Says:

I remember /everything/ and pretty much had it all too. I haven’t read this particular email forward. The “You’re still singing ‘Shot through the heart’ aren’t you?” was so true. I still was… out loud.

  9. Amanda Says:

OMG! these are always so cool!! :P I’ve seen/done 98% of stuff on this list! haha!! way cool!

  10. Ingozi Says:

Camo clothing was hip, or to think of it another way, dressing like a commando wasn’t a reason to get arrested.

  11. Fred Says:

It’s not “sike” — it’s “psych,” short for “psych out.” (Pronounced the same as “sike.”)

  12. NeedMoDro Says:

wow… that was great… and i totally remember skina marinki dinki doo!

  13. Ben Parker Says:

What a great list!!!! I laughed and nodded all the way through this . . . brought back some great memories - the popples and gummi bears?!?! Gotta love it.

  14. Jackie Says:

Kids Incorporated! One of the best shows ever. Sike!
    (I still have the album.)

And what about Swatch watches? The more you wore on your arms, the cooler you were. Not. And Tretorn tennis shoes, Espirit, shirts with really long “tails” in back. Oh, please, I hope 80’s styles never come back!

I saw both Poison and Bon Jovi in concert, wearing acid-washed denim jeans, (rolled up of course), big hair, and those suede crumple boots!!!

  15. BigMatt Says:

54, 55, and 66 still have me laughing … and singing.

  16. Cas Says:

Thanks very much for embarrassing the hell out of me, and for making me feel my age!!

  17. Jessica Says:

Oh my gosh, this is awesome!I remember like, almost all this stuff, lol!

  18. Matt M Says:

Where’s the 6 cans of Aqua Net it took to hold our giant hair? (Dude or Dudette)
Does anyone else remember Sun-In and all the other hair lightening products?
Andre The Giant is my friend.
    Mr.T the cartoon sries… The A Team!

Great job… Brought back memories from the GREATEST decade in the history of the world… Subsequently making us, the greatest generation in the history of the world.
    Rock on!

  19. maggie Says:

I’m hanging my head in shame as I realize I sing the Elephant Song to my son (who is only three) and how I used to watch that show almost every day… and I’m still singing Shot through the heart…

  20. leroy dixon Says:

brilliant now i know for sure i come from the 80’s ,still humming shot through the heart !

  21. cassie Says:

I actually saw Bon Jovi in concert too…I was about 13. I sat third row back and center. I remember when he came out, and I saw his shadow…my teeth started tingling. He’s HOT! Even today he can still make me swoon.

Anyway, Shot Through the Heart is not the song that most people remember. If you listen to the one on Bon Jovi’s debut album, you’ll realize that it’s not the one you’re thinking of. The one that most people are familiar with is “You Give Love A Bad Name” from the second album, “Slippery When Wet”.

I only know this because I’m a Bon Jovi BUFF!

  22. claire Says:

    too funny and scarily accurate

  23. mao Says:

I’m listeing to we are the world right now :)
I’m not American, but we have the same stuff here in Europe…
and I even remember when Bon Jovi was John Bon Jovi :)

  24. krista Says:

hey! I’m only 14 and I’ve done almost everything on that list! And the moment I read that, I switch my itunes to shot through the heart! I have My Little Pony books, and have seen both Gremlin movies, this is weird!!!

  25. Shawn Says:

hahaha. Any list with snap bracelets on it is a great list! :D Still sad She-ra and He-man never hooked up. Thanks for the trip back to childhood! Can’t believe how many of these I remember.
Got to this site via the Stumbleupon add-on via Firefox. Just in case you didn’t know they listed you on it.

[...] the 80’s. Granted, I was only five once the 80’s came to an end, but judging from this list, I remember quite a few [...]

  27. cassie Says:

Something else that really reminds me of the 80’s are shows like Matlock, Golden Girls, and Murder She Wrote. Anybody remember those?

  28. jemma Says:

#20 - my name actually was (and still is) Jem, so nyer :)

i remember most of these, apart from the american stuff, cos i’m british :)

  29. Micah Says:

This is great! I forgot only a few of these! But then it all came flooding back to me in an instant. Good times, for sure!

  30. Inflammable Hamster Says:

Hilarious… FIY, at least 80% of these are 90’s things, and it’s spelled PSYCHE.

    I love these little lists.

  31. Nicole Says:

lets be serious this is brilliant and really made me laugh out loud. I loved the eights, and it is my secret guilty pleasure.
    Thanks for the memories
    N

  32. Lisa Haid Says:

omg YES, i WAS STILL SINGING THAT IN MY HEAD!!

  33. Karen Kinee Says:

My daughter has a cat name She-ra it was her favorite as a kid. You forgot about Teddy Ruxpin & Cabbage Patch. I delivered Michael Jackson L A Times newspaper when he lived in Encino Ca. before he changed races. I still wear a mullet go figure.

  34. Nikki Says:

Thank goodness someone ELSE noticed that a lot of this was from the 90s.

    How ’bout:
    - you said, “bad,” but meant “good.”
    - Punky Brewster, Designing Women, The Carol Burnett Show
    - we still had records
    - story books with accompanying 45s
    - Back to the Future (all of them)
    - Tom Cruise was hot, not a freak — hello Top Gun!

  35. Rebecca Says:

Now I really miss the 80s, I still LOVE the music though. I am still singing in my head, my mom used to sing the elephant song to me, I am NOW singing that song. When I am down I always listen to the 80s music. This was so accurate, so what if the 80s went a little into the 90s, it was after all started in the 80s, but I am glad I ditched the hot pink and green clothes I used to wear ALL the time. I can’t believe my mom let me walk out like that…. :) I still have a Care Bear though and I OWN The Care Bears VHS, the first movie I ever saw in the movie theatre, and yes I own the Gremlins and The Goonies movies.

  36. Melody Says:

    Oh, dang.

  37. Tyesha Says:

LOL…This made my day!! I havent laughed so hard in a while. I am glad that other people remember Jem and the Holligrams because whenever I ask people about it, they look at me like I’m crazy! That was my favorite show. I am glad that it wasn’t all just a figment of my imagination.

  38. Lyssa Says:

    Great List.

All I have to say is that for like 6 years of my life my room was covered, wall to wall, with Bon Jovi pictures.
And I’ve seen them in concert more times than I care to mention.

    And thundercats…great show. Thundercats Hoooooo!

    And lets not forget:
Jelly bracelets, cabbage patch kids, when Indiana Jones and Han Solo were the coolest guys alive, and you wished your Dad could talk like Darth Vadar. Tom Cruise was cute (not crazy) in Legend and David Bowie was the Goblin King in Labyrinth, and Linda Carter was wonder woman! Also if you were like me you watched MTV (for the vidoes not the reality shows) and Nickelodeon on the same day. And if you were a girl you probably wore Debbie Gibson’s Electric Youth perfume.

  39. Tom Says:

Actually, it’s “PSYCH”–as in, “I psyched you out.” Clearly YOU weren’t an ’80s person. :)

  41. Sandy Says:

I loved each of them and try to pass on some to my kids. To all the comments of:”most apply to the 90’s”. You are right they do, but they all began in the 80’s (that’s because they were great!)

Just to add a few extras: Big hair and BRIGHT clothes were all topped off with Blue mascara and blue eyeliner, the darker the better. If blue didn’t work maybe purple would or maybe pink. You could always find something great to do after watching your favorite shows by singing along to Bon Jovi, or Debbie Gibson while playing a few games on your ATTARI. Pac-man was the BEST!!!

  42. cassie Says:

I agree Sandy. Pacman was awesome! So was Donkey Kong :)

  43. Len Says:

Interesting list. Some of these are definitely unique to the 80’s but I regret to inform you that some pre-date that. I am a late 60’s & 70’s child & definitely played with / watched / participated in some of the things listed here.

The more things change, the more they stay the same lol.

  44. James Says:

How about, #67: You were born in the eighties.

  45. Jennifer Bentley Says:

That was so totally awesome! I like could totally relate to the entire quiz! It rocked my face!!!

  46. K00keeh Says:

Why back in the day, young fella……

  47. SonofBlaine Says:

That was brilliant. Yes I sang the words to shot through the heart and then when I read number 55, I laughed hard. I agreed to all but one…

    32. You thought She-ra (Princess of Power) and He-Man should hook up.

I’m a big He-Fan and She-Raver, from he-man.org… and if you WERE an 80’s kid, youknow that that’s wrong and of course wouldn’t happen. They’re Twins. Eternia wasn’t in the South. LOL (I’m southern, I’m allowed)

  48. eighmie Says:

#1–PSYCHE not sike, Psyche as in PSYCHologically messing with someone.

  49. crayonhead Says:

The Bon Jovi song is “You Give Love A Bad Name”. Those are awesome though.

  52. Megan Irwin Says:

I sing skina marinki dinki doo to my one year old son….the 80s rocked!

  53. "M" Says:

Isn’t “shot through the heart” actually called “You give love a bad name”

  54. cassie Says:

Yes “M”, it is “You Give Love A Bad Name” which I clarified back in the 21st comment but most people are familiar with the lyrics and not the actual song name. Either way, they’re both really good songs.

  55. MysticalChicken Says:

I was born in 1979, so I remember like 95% of these. (And I’m sitting here going “YES! I totally remember that!”)

He-Man and She-Ra (what the hell is a “ra”? In keeping with the theme of pronoun-gender, shouldn’t it have been “She-Woman”?) should NOT have hooked up, because they were brother and sister. I was an avid fan of both shows as a kid (although, being a girl, I liked She-Ra better) and I remember the episode of He-Man which introduced She-Ra, and at the time, she was evil, until she and Prince Adam found out that ohmygod they’re related! And then I think they both defeated whoever the evil guy was that She-Ra used to work for. Or something. It was twenty-some years ago.

Also: Slap bracelets! I used to have one of those. And Fraggle Rock was the best. And Popples! I had a Popple with the manufacturer-given name of Potato Chip.

  56. win schiro Says:

i was born before that and shot through the heart still goes round my head

  57. Tom Says:

Wow! Do I feel old. LOL I still watch SBTB. That’s my dirty little secret.

  60. cassie Says:

    Thanks Robert :)

  61. Kristin Says:

I totally remember all of these. The one I had completley forgotten about though was the Oregon Trail! You had to grow up in the 80’s to know that one. I remember every Friday at school was our day to go to the computer lab and we played Oregon trail and also a program where you had to write your own story and you used backrounds and premade characters or objects to fill a book. That was the best day all week for sure.

  62. Jeremy Says:

True it’s all true. Did you do this yourself?

And to correct all the “psych” people, it was sike also!! I remember writing both and seeing both by people all over!

Anywho, it doesn’t really matter as long as it made people laugh, bring back warm memories, etc.

Awesome site thanks for the memories!!

  109. cassie Says:

@Neb Girl - Thanks! I agree. I remember seeing it both ways. Besides, If I changed it to “psych” it wouldn’t match the cartoon that goes with it.

I was born late in 1984 and remember most of this.

  111. Sky Says:

I was born in 1992 and can still nod along with quite a lot of the list. Now I have to go and get both the fresh prince rap and you give love a bad name out of my head…

  112. molly Says:

I was 9 in 1980 … and these are years I remember the most!! May I add: those swirly combs - always having one sticking out of your back pocket … or those fat Bonnie Bell lip glosses … or the rolly flavored lip glosses …. a bandana tied around your ankle - the right ankle if you were single/the left if you were taken … or the bandana around your thigh … the barrettes with the ribbons you braided through, which hung with beads at the end …. the roachclip with the feathers … wayfarer sunglasses … the thick belts with your name in metal letters in the metal frame … the rubber bracelets (think Madonna) …. IOU sweatshirts … Member’s Only Jackets … Z Cavaricci’s … shopping at Merry Go ‘Round … Joan Jett … Leather Jackets with fringes … AquaNet …
Those were the days! Thanks for the memories!
